BTM vs Stage Traxx 4

One organizes your library. The other runs your gig. The honest comparison for KaraokeVersion users wondering which Mac app they actually need — and whether it's both.

TL;DR

Different jobs. Most serious gigging musicians use both.

BTM is a free Mac app that downloads, organizes, and tags your KaraokeVersion library. It exists because the KV download workflow is a mess.

Stage Traxx 4 is a $29.99 (one-time) live performance hub for iPad, iPhone, and Mac. 32-track multitrack mixing, MIDI automation, lyrics autoscroll, band-wide network sessions.

If you only have one budget item, the question isn't "which one" — it's "which problem is hurting more right now: prep or performance?"

The two products at a glance

Stage 1 · At home

BTM

Download from KV. Auto-organize. Tag key/BPM. Build setlists. Free Mac app.

Stage 2 · On stage

Stage Traxx 4

32-track live mixing. MIDI automation. Lyrics autoscroll. Network sync. $29.99.

Most BTM-vs-X comparisons are about replacement. This one isn't. BTM and Stage Traxx 4 sit at different points in the gig workflow — prep and performance. They're functionally non-overlapping. The honest framing is "do you need one, the other, or both?", not "which is better?"

Which do you need first?

Get BTM if…

Free · Mac · github.com/bobbyleavens

  • You're a KaraokeVersion subscriber drowning in disorganized downloads
  • You play stereo backing tracks (no separate stems to FOH)
  • You need to shift song keys to match a singer
  • You want lyrics + chords auto-fetched per song
  • You don't need MIDI automation or live multitrack mixing
  • "Free" is non-negotiable

Get Stage Traxx 4 if…

Free w/ limits · $29.99 full unlock · iOS + Mac

  • You run multitrack stems live (separate vocals, click, instruments)
  • You want lyrics autoscroll synced to playback on stage
  • You need MIDI to switch patches, trigger lighting, sync rigs
  • You're in a band that needs synced setlists across multiple devices
  • You perform from iPad on stage
  • You read PDF sheet music or annotated charts
Combined workflow (most BTM users I talk to):
  1. Browse KaraokeVersion catalog inside BTM on Mac
  2. Download stems, custom mixes, key-shifted versions
  3. BTM auto-files everything with consistent naming and tags
  4. Drag the prepped files into Stage Traxx 4 on Mac
  5. iCloud syncs them to your iPad and iPhone overnight
  6. Walk on stage with iPad → multitrack out to interface → run the gig

The split: BTM does the boring desktop work so you never touch Finder. Stage Traxx does the high-stakes live work so the gig doesn't crash.

Honest things to know about each

BTM trade-offs

BTM is a focused tool — it does the KaraokeVersion library job better than anything else, but it doesn't pretend to be a live performance app. There's no multitrack mixer, no MIDI, no lyrics autoscroll synced to playback. If your live setup needs any of that, BTM is the wrong tool to evaluate against Stage Traxx — they're not competing.

It's also Mac-only. There's no iOS or Windows version planned.

Stage Traxx 4 trade-offs

Stage Traxx is enormously capable but has a real learning curve. The 32-track mixer, audio regions, MIDI embedding in lyrics, network sessions — each of these is a feature with real depth. If you only need to play stereo MP3s through a Mac, you're paying $29.99 for power you'll never use.

The pricing model is unusual. The $29.99 unlock includes "12 months of new features" — after that, you keep what you've unlocked, but new features released later may be locked behind a discounted renewal. It's not a subscription (you're never locked out), but it's not "buy once, free forever" either. Reasonable, just worth understanding.

Importantly: Stage Traxx doesn't connect to KaraokeVersion. You bring your own files. So if you're a KV user, you'll still need something to handle the download/organize side — which is exactly the gap BTM fills.

Frequently asked questions

Is BTM a replacement for Stage Traxx 4?

No. They're different tools for different jobs. BTM organizes and manages your KaraokeVersion library on Mac before the gig. Stage Traxx 4 runs your tracks live on stage with multitrack mixing, MIDI automation, and lyrics autoscroll. Most gigging musicians using both use BTM at home and Stage Traxx on stage.

Does Stage Traxx 4 download tracks from KaraokeVersion?

No. Stage Traxx imports audio files you already own — it doesn't connect to any backing-track catalog. You bring your own MP3s, WAVs, or multitrack stems. BTM is the tool that handles KaraokeVersion downloads, custom stem exports, and library organization.

Do I need Stage Traxx if I already use BTM?

Not necessarily. If you're a solo/duo cover act playing simple stereo backing tracks, you can run them straight from QuickTime or any audio player. Stage Traxx becomes worth it when you need multitrack live mixing (separate stems to FOH and in-ears), MIDI automation for guitar patches and lighting, lyrics autoscroll, or band-wide setlist sync.

What's the price of Stage Traxx 4?

Free download with a 6-song limit and several disabled features. Full unlock is a $29.99 USD one-time purchase. After 12 months you keep what you've unlocked — only future feature releases require a renewal license.

Does Stage Traxx 4 run on Mac?

Yes — as of January 2026, Stage Traxx 4 runs natively on iPad, iPhone, and Mac (macOS 13.6+) with iCloud sync across all three. Earlier versions were iOS-only.

Can I use BTM and Stage Traxx 4 together?

Yes — and many serious gigging musicians do. Download and organize with BTM on Mac, then drag the prepared files into Stage Traxx for live use. Stage Traxx will iCloud-sync them across your iPad and iPhone for stage use.
